62d Pennsylvania VolunteersCompany G: Kramer Guards (Allegheny County) |
|
|
Company Origins |
Recruited in Allegheny County. Company mustered in on 31 July 1861.
Not on muster-out roll indicates fate had not been determined at the close of the war, at which time these rolls were made out. Those who died before first battle probably were victims of typhoid fever that became rampant during the fall and winter of 1861/62 while the regiment was stationed at Minor's Hill, Va.
The Veteran Reserve Corps, originally called the Invalid Corps, was the military body to which soldiers were transferred when they were not healthy enough to be sent back to their original unit, but not sick or disabled enough to be sent home.

|
Frank C. O'Brien |
Captain |
Resigned 3 October 1862.
Died 7 January 1893. Buried in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pa. Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age at Enrollment: 31; Occupation: Plasterer; Residence: Pittsburgh; Hair: Brown; Eyes: Black; Complexion: Fair; Height: 5'8" Remarks: Resigned 10-3-62. Frank appears to be the older brother of Sgt. Joseph O'Brien. The 1860 Census places them in the same dwelling as their father Joseph, although Frank, married and aged 30, is listed as head of his own family. Some confirmation of the relationship comes from the 1880 Census by the fact that the place of birth of his father is listed as Maryland. Maryland was listed as the place of birth of the elder Joseph O'Brien in the 1860 Census. Frank (or Francis, as he is listed in the 1860 Census) married his wife Ellen before the war. They had two children, Harry G. and Ruthan. In the 1880 Census, the line for Frank's occupation is blank. Pension card file, filed by widow Ellen O'Brien, indicates he also served in Company G, 66th Pennsylvania Infantry, but there is no other evidence for it. Formed in Philadelphia in July 1862, the 66th was consolidated with 73rd and 99th Pennsylvania Volunteers in March 1862, months before O'Brien resigned. |

Remarks: Deserted 8- -62. Harrisons Landing. In 1897 Samuel Geissinger filed an invalid pension claim in which he indicated that Charles Dunbar was an alias. According to the pension record he served both in the 62d Pennsylvania and Company B of the 6th Ohio Cavalry. He mustered in the later regiment as a private on 1 December 1863 and mustered out 27 June 1865. His age at enrollment was listed as 35. On 6 February 1907 he filed for a state bounty of $100 that he claimed was due him from the state of Pennsylvania. His request was denied because he had been a deserter, A law passed in 1888 had relieved soldiers who subsequently served and were honorably discharged from the charge of desertion, so Geissinger's problem was his use of an alias. He appealed, but his case was not settled until 21 November 1912, with the verdict in his favor. |

Christian Zeitler |
Wounded at Bethesda Church (Cold Harbor), 3 June 1864. He was shot in the left arm, midway between the shoulder at elbow. Mustered out with company, 13 July 1864. Although mustered out, rather than discharged for medical reasons, he was admitted to Armory Square General Hospital in Washington DC on 12 June 1864, nine days after his injury, transferred to another hospital, and never rejoined the regiment. He applied for a disability pension on July 26, 1864. Zeitler was born in Adelsheim, in Mosbach. His entire family came to the United States in the early to mid 1850s, settling in Baltimore, where most of them remained. His parents, Christian and Mary Zeitler, lived there till their deaths, as did at least two sisters. Christian apparently came to Allegheny, then a separate city from Pittsburgh, by himself from Baltimore, for reasons unknown. It is not known what he did prior to his enlistment. He returned to Allegheny City after the war. Family sources report that he suffered a lifelong injury as a result his wound. He filed for an invalid pension on 29 July 1864. He married Margaret Sellman on 12 January 1869. In the 1870 census, he is listed in Ward 3 of Allegheny City. He was then a citizen, and his occupation is listed as "policeman." He was probably a park policeman. Later occupations included shoemaker, laborer, packer, and agent. Christian and Maggie had nine children. Only four, all girls, lived to adulthood. Katherine, Margaret, Barbara, and Anna. He died on 29 December 1903 and is buried in Uniondale Cemetery in Pittsburgh. Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age at Enrollment: 21; Occupation: Shoemaker; Residence: Baltimore, Md.; Hair: Dark; Eyes: Gray; Complexion: Light; Height: 5'6"; Remarks: Rolls spell last name Zeitler. Erroneously listed as Zeither in Bates. In addition to the Zeither misspelling, Christian Zeitler's name has appeared erroneously in other documents or plaques as Zettler, Beitler, and even Siebert. Thanks to David Lawrence, his great-great grandson, for sending me the correct spelling of his name and additional information. |
