62d Pennsylvania Volunteers

Company I: Jefferson Guards (Jefferson County)

62d Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg

Company Origins

Recruited in Jefferson County, the company was known as the Jefferson Guards. The company mustered in on 29 July 1861, leaving Brookville for Pittsburgh on 25 July. A slightly different roster of Company I (with no remarks) appears on Brenda Uplinger's Civil War Soldiers From Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, 62d Regiment PA Volunteers, Company I.

Not on muster-out roll indicates fate had not been determined at the close of the war, at which time these rolls were made out. Company I seems to have a higher percentage listed this way than most other companies. Based on the few corrections I have found, I suspect most were killed or wounded and discharged in early battles. Those who died before first battle probably were victims of typhoid fever that became rampant during the fall and winter of 1861/62 while the regiment was stationed at Minor's Hill, Va.

The Veteran Reserve Corps, originally called the Invalid Corps, was the military body to which soldiers were transferred when they were not healthy enough to be sent back to their original unit, but not sick or disabled enough to be sent home.

James Alexander Glenn

Private; Corporal

Mustered out with company, 13 July 1864.

Armstrong County, Pa., Her People, Past and Present, J.H. Beers & Co., 1914 (Transcribed from pages 408-412 by Rodney G Rosborough for the Armstrong County Beers Project) has a section on the Glenn family. A biography appears about James A. Glenn stating that at the Wilderness, "he was dangerously wounded in the abdomen on May 5th, 1864. Was five days in government wagons, enduring with others almost incredible suffering before a more comfortable method of transportation could be procured. For a time his life was despaired of, but subsequently he partially recovered, owing no doubt, in part to the attention shown him among others by Miss Marsh, of Massachusetts, a volunteer nurse in Armory Square Hospital, Washington, D.C. He was not able to return home till more than a month after the expiration of his time, and has never fully recovered. Prior to being wounded he was never an inmate of a hospital and seldom off duty. He was discharged a corporal." There is only one Glenn listed in the Bates roster, so my guess is that the middle initial stands for Alexander, and this description applies to this volunteer. Although hospitalized and removed from the regiment, he still might have mustered out with the company.

William M. Fairman

Private; Corporal; Sergeant?

Mustered out with company, 13 July 1864.

Wounded and captured at Gainseville, 27 June 1862, as evidenced by Corp. C. W. Fairman being listed on register of Prisoners Received at C. S. Prison [Richmond?] on June 27th and 29th, 1862.

A Sergeant William McFairman of Company I, according to a report issued by General Griffin, received honorable mention by Colonel Hull in his battle report for his conduct during the Battle of Gettysburg. Bates lists William M. Fairman as a Private, but the CWVCF indicates he was promoted to Corporal on 17 February 1862. Name is listed as William Mc. Fairman in American Civil War Soldiers Record and 1870 Census for Young Township, Jefferson County. His wife's name was Elizabeth, or Lizzie.

Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age at Enrollment: 24; Occupation: Teacher; Residence: Punxsutawney; Hair: Red; Eyes: Blue; Complexion: Dark; Height: 6' 1/2" Remarks: Pr. to Corp. 2-17-62.

According to a biographical sketch in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania - Her Pioneers and People, by Dr. William James
McKnight (Chicago J.H. Beers, 1917), Fairman was born at Brookville, Jefferson county on 31 October 1836 but moved to Illinois at age 10 where he was raised by his paternal grandfather. He was teaching school in Illinois until the war broke out, when he returned to Pennsylvania to join the 62d. The sketch confirms that Fairman was wounded at Gaines’ Mills. After the war Fairman moved to Punxsutawney, where until 1870 he taught school during the winter season and followed lumbering in the summer time. Then he
took up the study of law, entering the office of Jenks & Winslow, and was admitted to the bar in 1874. In 1876 he was elected
district attorney, serving until 1880. As a defense attorney, he was also very successful: " For a number of years Mr. Fairman had the unique
distinction of having defended every homicide in the county from the time he began practice, with only one conviction among his clients." He practised law into his eighties.

Fairman ran unsuccessfully for U. S. Congress in 1894. He served as a delegate to Democratic National Convention from Pennsylvania in both 1912 and 1916.

Privates

'But who among the private soldiers is named? Have the dead been mentioned except in numbers? Have the cripples been referred to except in the aggregate? Yet it was the rank and file that stood the shock of battle and that gave blow for blow. It was the columns of soldiers that charged the enemy or stood like a rock against fierce assaults. Does history do more with the name of the private soldier than bundle it up with a thousand others and call the combination a regiment?' -- Captain W. J. Patterson, 62d Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment"
