62d Pennsylvania VolunteersCompany M: Blair Guards (Blair County) |
|
|
Company Roster |
Recruited in Blair County. Company mustered in on 9 August 1861, one of two companies that were added to the 62d a month after the regiment was formed with its original ten companies. Company L and M joined the 62d a month after Companies A through K, and that apparently had special designation as Independent Companies. Most regiments had ten companies, and the 62d had tweve. Because the independent companies' three year terms ended a month after the regiment's three year term ended, the soldiers of Company L and M were mustered out in August instead of July. To complete their terms of service, on 3 July, they were transferred to Company K of the 91st Pennsylvania Volunteers in compliance with Special order 159 from the Fifth Corps Headquarters, issued on 2 July 1864. Major John D. Lentz, the 91st regiment's commanding officer, originally assigned them to company G, but after he received orders from the brigade headquarters to assign them to the smallest company, on 22 July 1864 he transferred them the soldiers to company K. At the time, the 91st was in the same brigade as the 62d, so the transfer would have been an easy transition.
According to the special order one officer and 25 enlisted soldiers were present at the time of the transfer, and 22 enlisted men were absent, including members of both Companies L and M. The named soldiers, however, were only the soldiers who had re-enlisted veteran volunteers. It is only speculation on my part what the officers and 16 or so other enlisted soldiers did until 15 August, when they were mustered out. It is possible that they accompanied, without joining the 91st, who for the rest of the summer was engaged in the construction of seigeworks near Petersburg that became known as Fort Prescott. Perhaps they were given other duties or allowed to maintain their independent company status. Some members of the Company K, under First Sergeant John R. Garden, were ordered to report to the 5th Corps Hospital at City Point, Virginia, so perhaps the soldiers not assigned to 91st were given similar detail work in the Washington, D.C. area to complete their terms.
The 91st continued its seige construction for most of the summer. On 30 July 1864, the 91st were held in reserve in the Battle of the Crater. On 6 February 1865 the company may have seen its last major conflict at Hatcher's Run, Va. After that battle, the regiment took part in no further engagements. One of the regiment's last activities, during the month of August 1865 until they were mustered out, was participation in the garrisoning of forts,
The Veteran Reserve Corps, originally called the Invalid Corps, was the military body to which soldiers were transferred when they were not healthy enough to be sent back to their original unit, but not sick or disabled enough to be sent home.

Peter M. Abbott |
Mustered in 4 July 1861 originally with Company F. Transferred to Company M on 1 November 1861. Court-martialed for being absent without leave from 16 June to 16 July 1864. Before his General Court Martial, in a signed statement, he testified that he left with the Companies "L" & "M" for City Point July 19th in the afternoon, but that "Capt Murry gave me a pass to visit my father at Corps Hospital to return by 9 A.M. 20th." On his return, however, he found the boat had already left for Washington, so he "went to the Pro Marsl City Point Stated that I was left and he directed me to return to the Regt* was assigned to when my Statement must be made to enable me to get the necessary pass to join my Company at Washington." Testimony against him was that he has straggled away from his company on the 16 June 1864 and had been largely absent ever since 2 May 1864. Abbott was found guilty on 2 August 1864. Sentenced to forfeit all pay and allowance from then on and to make good the time lost by serving time in the 91st PA. Dishonorably discharged on 20 October 1864. According to information found on the 91st P. V. website, Abbot's conviction and dishonorable discharge seem to have been overturned, based on the fact that his wife, Margaret Jane Doyle Abbott, received a pension, and the government paid for his tombstone. He died on 22 October 1890, in West Newton, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and was buried in the Salem Church Cemetery in Westmoreland County. Abbot's granddaughter, Vera Elsie Jones, became president of the GAR and president of the Pennsylvania Department of the GAR. |

|
John S. Long |
According to Bates, John Long died 13 January 1863, of wounds received at Fredericksburg, 13 December 1862. Pension records confirm this and expand that he was wounded by a musket ball in his knee in Fredericksburg and died as a result of his wounds on 13 January 1863 at a hospital in Alexandria, VA after a doctor tried to remove the ball. He was buried at Alexandria, Va. Bates provides no middle initial. John S. Long is the listing in the pension record. There is some confusion concerning John Long, since there were three volunteers by that name in the regiment. John Long from Company D is not listed in Bates, but his burial record at the Gettysburg National Cemetery indicates he was a member of Company D. The John Long from Company L survived the war. One of these John Longs may also have begun his Civil War service as a private in Company H, 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment Infantry (3 months)-- John B. Long is listed. Thanks to Jen West for helping clear up some of the confusion. It was she who examined the pension records. Her step-father is the great great nephew of John Long from Company D. |

Isaac Smith was age 19 when he joined the regiment. During his service he was wounded on the face and arm. He was most severely wounded at Fredericksburg and sent to the Continental Hotel in Baltimore, which was being used as a hospital. A family story is told that Isaac lost his sight for a few days when wounded, but was then able to return to the regiment. Mustered out with company, 15 August 1864. Isaac was a farmer living in Girard Township, Clearfield County, when he joined in neighboring Blair County. He was described as having a light complexion, dark hair and 5' 5 1/2" in height. He returned to Clearfield County after the war, married a Fannie McCorkle, with whom he had nine children. He became prosperous enough to have several farms and respected enough to become the first Master of the local Grange Hall. He is buried in the Gillingham Cemetery. Two of his brothers were killed in the war. The portrait of Isaac Smith was taken shortly after the war at the time of his wedding. Isaac wrote many letters during the war. Thanks to David E. Smith for providing the information about his great grandfather, the portrait and two of the letters. | |
