In Spring 2004, Sustainable Tompkins undertook a major study initiative.

The entire scope of this project, under the direction of project coordinator, Dr. Gay Nicholson, can be viewed at:

The culmination of that feasibility study was the realization that this region was extremely fertile ground for this type of sustainable community development.

A number of committee volunteers stepped forward, leading to the formation of the Sustainable Tompkins Coordinating Council, and the establishment of a number of project teams, each one focused on advancing aspects of regional sustainable community development.

Project teams are working on:

Developing a green building resource hub

Creating healthy, multi-generational communities

Sustainable land use and planning

Communicating sustainability through the arts and culture

Promoting local production and consumption

Alternative fuels and public transit

Sustainable landscape design
