Ithaca College Hosts Annual Salute to Veterans

ITHACA, NY — Members of the community are invited to join in honoring our nation’s veterans at Ithaca College’s Eighth Annual Veterans Day Celebration on Thursday, Nov. 11. The one-hour program will begin at noon in Ford Hall in the Whalen Center.

Serving as master of ceremonies will be D. Kim Dunnick, professor of music performance, with Ithaca College president Tom Rochon providing a welcome address. There will be a presentation of the colors by the Ithaca College/Cornell University ROTC Color Guard, along with musical performances by the Ithaca College Brass Choir and IC VoICes.

This year’s keynote speaker is U.S. Navy Capt. Daniel L. Weed, commanding officer and a professor of naval science for the Naval ROTC unit at Cornell University. Trained as a naval nuclear power and surface warfare officer, Capt. Weed has served aboard the U.S.S. Virginia, U.S.S. Spruance and U.S.S. Cushing, among other vessels, with on shore assignments including service on the Joint Chiefs of Staff Directorate for Strategy and Plans. He is designated as a Foreign Area Officer, Western Pacific, with over 10 years of experience serving in Japan. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation that will be used in making care packages to send to troops serving overseas. Suggested items for donation include coffee, pumpkin/sunflower seeds, boot socks, travel size baby wipes, liquid hand sanitizer, DVD movies, video games and playing cards.
