Stress: Its Nature and Management

OnLine Course Assignment

STRESS IN THE NEWS ASSIGNMENT

Purpose of Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to help you become aware of current findings relative to stress and its management.

Assignment:

There has been a tremendous growth of research on stress and the efficacy of various stress management techniques. Search professional journals for 4 different articles on stress that have appeared saince 2000. Strive to choose a diversity of topics, such as the role of stress in a specific disease, impact of stress on the immune system, workplace stress, stress and spirituality, burnout, or time management. Seek out topics of interest to you, either now or perhaps in preparation for the future, rather than take the first available topic that appears as a result of your search.

Be sure that the source of the article is reliable and well-respected and from a professional journal (referred publication - i.e., Journal of Social Issues. American Journal of Health Promotion, etc.). You can access the Ithaca College library electronically and use their data bases (sign in using your user ID and password). Databases related to psychology and sociology as well as medicine and education are typically the best place to find this information. Additionally, some other reliable sources available via the web are JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) and Morbidity and Mortality Weekly. You can also locate articles via the web site findarticles.com or by using the library or accessing the Internet Public Library. Additionally, some of the Stress Course links contain current articles as well. Additional sources may be other professional journals that are available online.

For each article, write an overview of what you have learned regarding new information about stress, its role in disease, and how to manage it effectively. Use these specific headings in your paper and incorporate the following information within them:

  • Title of article
  • Five key points - bulleted lists are acceptable, but use complete sentences.
  • Summarize the new findings relative to stress
  • Application to stress management and how it relates to the information covered on that topic in the textbook
  • The bottom line (one sentence statement about the article)
  • Two questions (what question would you pose for further research on this topic and what question perhaps should have been asked but wasn't)
  • Bibliographic details (title, authors, name of journal, URL, etc.) Tell me how you found the article so I can retrieve and read it.

Each report on an article should be a minimum of 2 pages in length and a maximum of 3 pages in length; double spaced and 1 1/2 inch margins all around. If possible, combine all your reports into one file and submit it to me.

Again, I would encourage you to select articles that are of interest to you, that contain a high quality of information, and are relevant to stress management. If you have any doubts about whether an article is acceptable or not, email me the URL of the article as well as your questions/concerns.

Submission: The article assigment should be submitted to me via the dropbox in CourseInfo. If possible, include your reports on all four articles within one file. Your file should be saved with the following file name: XXXnews.doc if you are using Microsoft Word or XXXnews.rft if you are using WordPerfect or Microsoft Works (XXX represents your three initials).

Late Work: No late work will be accepted. If your work is late, you receive a zero. Plan ahead.
