New Therapies

Purpose: An increasing number of new approaches to manage stress are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. These include pet therapy, reiki, gem therapy, and aromatherapy. Other alternative approaches include hypnosis, T'ai Chi, and Qigong. The purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to some of the increasingly popular approaches to the management of stress.

Assignment: Select one of the following therapies: pet therapy, reiki, gem therapy, aromatherapy, hypnosis, T'ai Chi, or Qigong. . For the therapy you have selected, write a short paper that includes the following information:

  • Definition
  • Historical development
  • How this therapeutic approach is used in the management of stress
  • Benefits of therapy in relation to the management of stress
  • Best applications of therapy -- in what situations is it likely to work best
  • Web sites (3 web sites pertaining to each specific therapeutic approach)
