SUMMER COLLEGE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS - 2008 MINI COURSES

Only time for a week or two of college this summer? Attend one of our special minicourses for one week or two. No grades are awarded, but in a morning and afternoon session professors and students immerse themselves in their subject. In the evenings, college students are available to assist with your work, but some evenings are set aside just for fun. Students who successfully complete their workshops will receive a certificate of completion. The cost for room, board and tuition is $1,130 for the one week program.

Writing College Application Essays
Students will explore the college application essay developing strategies for writing essays which inform, persuade and engage the reader. Students will examine a number of successful college essays and write, study, and critique their own personal essays

Understanding Financial Markets
Financial markets strongly affect the global economy, as well as the fortunes of individual companies and individual investors. You will spend a week working in Ithaca College's award-winning trading room learning how the stock market works. No prior knowledge is required; however, most students come into the class with a strong interest in the market.

Workshop in Sports Media*
Interested in pursuing a career in sports media? In this workshop you'll get hands-on experience writing your own material while learning about a professional career in sports media. During some classes you will work in a computer lab, while at other times you will be shooting video footage in a television studio. Your class will also visit a professional sport organization (eg., baseball franchise, or Glen Speedway) to observe media members in action, or professionals will be invited into the classroom.

Ecological Field Experience
Explore the science of ecology. During this class, we will take advantage of the natural areas surrounding Ithaca College. As we look at a waterfall and feel the water, we will learn how it was shaped by glaciers. We will study biological invasions and learn natural resource management as we hunt for exotic species. We will explore trees and forestry as we learn the survival skill of lighting a fire without matches. We will examine the mammals of the area by learning their tracks and other signs. We will listen to the natural rhythms of nature as we spend an evening in the woods. This is Ecology as it was meant to be.

Writing the Short Story
This mini-course will analyze both professional and student writing with each student developing one short story emphasizing plot, characterization, dialogue, description, narration, mood and viewpoint.

Sex, Sports, and Chemistry
A practical application of chemistry and materials used in everyday life, this laboratory course will focus on the chemistry of drugs, cosmetics, and plastics. Students will work in the laboratory synthesizing molecules and use modern instrumentation, such as NMR, GC-MS, FT-IR, and HPLC, for analysis. There will also be a session on computational chemistry to explore how the structure of molecules effects how the molecule works.

Digital Photography
This intensive one-week course will teach digital imaging for Art Photography. Using your own scanned photographs and digital camera images, students will create new artwork using the computer. The course will cover Photoshop techniques, scanning and digital capture, and outputting to print. Instructor Danielle Mericle.
