Both the facility and the curriculum for our School of Music are designed to promote the success of the classically trained musician. The James J. Whalen Center for Music, which greatly expanded or replaced existing space in 1999, not only provides three performance spaces, over 90 practice rooms, and nearly 170 pianos, but it also houses spacious faculty studios that allow for individual instruction as well as intimate repertoire classes.

Ithaca College was originally founded as a conservatory, and the School of Music still reflects that tradition. Faculty members in Whalen each maintain a private studio for student lessons and for their own work. The facility also incorporates modern teaching techniques in its technology classroom, music education resource room, and large rehearsal rooms. And the cutting-edge electroacoustic music and recording studios put the finest tools of the trade at our students' fingertips.

Ultimately, musicians come to Ithaca to play, and Whalen has three great facilities for students, faculty, and guest performers. Ford Hall is a large auditorium ideally suited for symphonic and choral productions, the Hockett Family Recital Hall was especially built to accommodate chamber music ensembles, and the Nabenhauer Recital Room offers a more intimate performance space.
