The Mayday Group -- "action for change in music education: information and resources for scholars, students, and teachers" -- a group that encourages critical reflection and the pursuit of social justice through music education -- they publish the online scholarly journal ACT: Action, Criticism and Theory for Music Education.

Music for All -- This is a national organization that engages in advocacy and progams promoting music education for ALL students, with particular attention to ensuring that low income communities, schools, students, and families have access to music education -- the site includes research, information about programs, and much more.

Music Education, Multiculturalism, and Anti-Racism -- Can We Talk? -- a 2006 article about developing a theory and practice of anti-racist music education

National Association for the Study and Performance of African American Music -- from their website: "NASPAAM is an organization whose purpose is to further the development and dissemination of African American music through advocacy, education, and performance. The organization is committed to providing leadership and motivation for music educators, musicians, and others interested in fostering the inclusion of African and African American music in education and society. The organization serves its members and others by increasing the awareness of Black Music and its contribution to the arts, culture, and society."

National Association for Music Education -- Music Educators National Conference (MENC) -- lots of valuable articles, resources, and links.

The National Association for Music Education: Does Music with a Sacred Text Have a Place in the Public Schools? -- a website that supplies teachers with information about how to introduce religious music into their curriculum.

The Sphinx Organization -- a great organization that works to increase the participation of Blacks & Latinos in music schools, as professional musicians, and as classical music audiences. They especially administer youth development initiatives in underserved communities through music education.

The Sphinx Kids Homepage -- includes information about minority composers, videos of minority string players practicing, fun games, and more.

VH1 Save the Music Foundation -- "a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in America's public schools, and raising awareness of the importance of music as a part of each child's complete education."

American Music Conference (AMC) -- good basic information about music education and the effects of music on development.

VSA Arts -- a good website that works toward helping people with disabilities learn about and participate in performing arts.

Music K8 -- an online magazine for music educators, filled with lesson plans and quality literature that for students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Music Teachers National Association -- a website focused on the value of music study and providing support for music teachers.

The Neglected Muse -- a good article about why music should be a core area of study for all students.

Interdisciplinary Use of Music -- this website has an interdisciplinary project for 9th grade students combining math, science, social studies, and music.

Interdisciplinary Curriculum and Instruction in Music Education -- a website full of ideas about integrating music into the study of other subjects.

Ethnomusicology Resources on the Web -- a great list of links about musics of the world -- an excellent resource for music educators and others interested in world music and multicultural music education.

Learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. through Music -- provides an in depth curricular unit about Martin Luther King, Jr., with an emphasis on African American music and the beginnings of Jazz. CD's, texts, and additional supplements are suggested.

The Hip Hop Violin and String Quartets of Haitian American Composer, Daniel Bernard Roumain -- a radio segment about Roumain and his hip hop compositions -- includes audio clips of his work, as performed by the Lark String Quartet.

Nuttin' But Stringz: Hip Hop Violin -- a radio segment about a pair of violin playing, Julliard trained African American brothers who are making their own music.

Ethel: A String Quartet with an Entirely New Sound -- hip hop samples, sound effects, and more in the world of string quartets.

Interdiscplinary Study of Westward Expansion -- presents a unit of study about the development of the U.S. West using the musical, Oklahoma, as a vehicle to explore history and cultural myths.

Dear Diary: Confessions of a Nice White Girl -- a creative and personal article by music education professor Deborah Bradley about the power and meaning of music education in pursuit of social justice.

Reference Articles -- a valuable resource for both teacher and student that allows students or teachers to explore music of different cultures, historical periods, as well as different musical styles.

American Composers Forum: Band Quest -- a website aimed at middle school instrumental music, which includes a music lab for students with interesting games and activities related to many of the compositions.

The New York Philharmonic Kids Website -- an interesting and interactive website for kids that allows them to explore different instruments and composition with interactive games.

University of Virginia Library: Music in American Life -- a summary of American music that often gets overlooked in history. The website includes hymns, spirituals, musicals, minstrel shows and protest songs.

Shattinger Music Company -- an online music store for purchasing new music and CDs.

Music Education Directory -- lots of links, inlcuding to lesson plans, governement programs, and instrument retailers.

The International Association for Jazz Education -- a great website dedicated to the evolution of jazz in our schools and lives -- offers links to what's happening in the jazz world, information about its teacher training institute, an artist outreach network, and much more.

Jazz at Lincoln Center -- educational programs and a jazz curriculum designed around a 10 CD set (one CD-ROM), written and narrated by Wynton Marsalis. The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchstra plays a variety of music, at times centered around the African American jazz tradition -- information, too, about the orchestra.

Jazz History through a Photograph -- provides students and teachers the opportunity to explore jazz history through one photograph, an August 1958 photo of 57 Jazz Artists in Harlem. These are the leading artists of their time, with biographical information and links to a timeline of their lives, instruments, and style periods.

Smithsonian Jazz Program -- called "culturally important...spectacular musically," by the New York Times includes links to concert events and Smithsonian educational programs -- lectures by jazz musician and scholar, David Baker -- and, check out the Jazz Legacy Education Program.

Jamey Aebersold Jazz Books -- offers a large variety of song books with accompaniment through all styles of jazz -- books include information about important musicians associated with particular styles and time periods.

Music for Little Folks -- offers a developmentally appropriate music curriculum for very young children.

Kindermusik International -- music instructional program and materials for young children.

American Orff-Schulwerk Association -- a website about the teachings of music educator, Carl Orff, which focus on active learning by singing, playing, hearing, moving, and creating -- links, workshops, and other useful information.

Dalcroze Society of America -- musical training with the basic elements of rhythm, dynamics, tone, and form -- publications, resources, and workshops.

Music, Mind, and Movement -- an organization formed to build bridges among music, dance, and psychology -- offers course, lectures, and workshops.

Down Beat -- an online magazine for jazz musicians and teachers who are interested in and want to incorporate jazz into their lessons.

Ricci Adams' Music Theory -- a great resource for teachers and students, which includes lessons and exams to practice and reinforce skills in music theory learned in class.

Jewish Music Resources -- This site provides links to books and articles that you can read online about Jewish music.

National Public Radio's Website about Jazz -- includes historical material, audio clips, and more.

Claude Williams: African American Jazz/Swing Fiddler -- a great violinist and guitar player who has received the National Endowment of the Arts Heritage Award -- includes an interview.

Educators Use Rap as a Teaching Tool -- a radio broadcast about teachers who are using hip-hop effectively to make connections between contemporary music/poetry and the classics -- scroll to the bottom of the page, click and listen.

Information about Traditional Korean Music -- This site provides information about the history of Korean folk music, about instruments used in Korean folk music, and about contemporary Korean folk music.

Phong Nguyen: Songs of Viet Nam -- a multi-talented Vietnamese American musician who has received a National Endowment of the Arts Heritage Award.

The Apsara Ensemble: Cambodian Traditional Dancers and Musicians -- a group that has received a National Endowment of the Arts Heritage Award.

Puerto Rican Music -- a good overview of Puerto Rican music traditions and contributions.
