Roles of Clinical Education Participants
Title: Director of Clinical Education (DCE)/Assistant Director of Clinical Education (ADCE)
Description: Academic faculty members representing Ithaca College in the Clinical Education component of the Physical Therapy Program. The ADCE works most closely with students participating in Clinical Education I, II and the DCE with students participating in Clinical Education III-VI
Responsibilities:
1. Clinical site recruitment, selection, retention, and development.
2. Communication between academic institution and clinical sites.
3. Assessment of clinical sites.
4. Assignment of students to clinical education placements.
5. Set learning objectives for clinical education courses.
6. Assess student readiness for clinical setting.
7. Monitor and assess student performance during clinical education coursework.
8. With the CCCE, CI and student, determine solutions to clinical education issues.
9. Provide individual student teaching regarding clinical practice issues.
10. Represent the academic institution in issues concerning student performance during clinical education course work.
11. Determine the grade for clinical education courses.
12. With the student, CI, CCCE, and/or academic faculty, design and implement a remedial plan, if appropriate, for students who are not successful in clinical education courses.
13. Assist with clinical education faculty development.
14. Act as a liaison between the site and the academic faculty/institution.
Title: Center Coordinator of Clinical Education (CCCE)
Description: An individual appointed by the college and the site responsible for coordinating the assignment and activities of students at the Clinical Education site.
Responsibilities:
1. Performs administrative functions between the college and the site.
2. Liaison between CI and student when necessary.
3. Coordinate center-specific activities related to student program.
4. Develops site-specific activities related to student program.
5. Supervises the performance assessment of students.
6. With the DCE/ADCE, CI and student, performs problem solving and assists in planning alternative, remedial, accommodative or challenging learning experiences as indicated with the individual student.
7. Supervises education planning and acts as a resource to the CI/student.
8. Identifies and informs the school as to the health requirements the student must provide.
9. Conducts staff development activities to enhance clinical education.
10. Implements a plan of program review and revision, advocates for clinical education and maintains necessary documentation.
11. Acts as a role model for ethical, legal, and professional behavior.
Title: Clinical Instructor (CI)
Description: A physical therapist with a minimum of one year of clinical experience directly involved in the supervision of a student in the clinical setting.
Responsibilities:
1. Plans appropriate clinical learning experiences with the student.
2. Communicates expectations, objectives and assignments to student.
3. Provides ongoing feedback to student regarding performance.
4. Observes and analyzes student performance on a regular basis.
5. Collaborates with the student to design and progress learning experiences consistent with the student’s academic preparation.
6. Completes midterm and final student CPI’s.
7. Communicates to CCCE and DCE/ADCE student performance.
8. Acts as a role model for ethical, legal and professional behavior.
Title: Student
Description: Physical therapy student engaged in required clinical education courses.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide DCE/ADCE with preferences for clinical education assignment.
2. Arranges for transportation to site and housing during affiliation.
3. Assume responsibility for all costs incurred for travel and housing related to clinical affiliations.
4. Contacts facility in writing prior to affiliation in the form of a letter of introduction and submission of the NYS Student Profile.
5. Identifies a personal list of objectives specific to the type of care and level of clinical education.
6. Fulfills all health certification requirements identified by the site.
7. Actively participates in clinical learning process.
8. Completes all assignments requested by the clinical site.
9. Provides feedback to clinical instructor and DCE/ADCE about the learning environment and experiences.
10. Communicates with CI, CCCE and DCE/ADCE regarding own performance and learning environment experience. (Including written evaluation of the learning experience).
