Allen E. Ostrander Trombone Composition Prize
The Ithaca College Trombone Troupe announces the eighth biennial Allen E. Ostrander Trombone
Composition Prize. Since 1989 the Trombone Troupe has commissioned works by such prominent
composers as Dana Wilson, Steve Brown, Paul Goldstaub, Frank Siekmann, and Sydney Hodkinson to add
significant works to the trombone ensemble repertoire. This prize was created to further
encourage the composition and performance of the highest quality trombone ensemble repertoire in honor
and memory of one of the most prolific and prominent contributors to the literature and pedagogy of the
trombone.
Deadline for receipt of manuscripts: 5 December 2008
Guidelines:

Entries must be original unpublished compositions for trombone ensemble of six or more
individual parts. At least one of the parts should be for bass trombone. No
transcriptions/arrangements (except those of the composer) will be eligible.

The composition may have already been performed, but shall have been written within two years of the
contest deadline.

The composition should be conceived and constructed to ensure an effective performance.by
professional, college, and university ensembles.

Entries shall be between 6 and 12 minutes in length.

Compositions must be submitted with a full score and parts. A compact disc recording (may be
computer generated) of the work must be submitted with the score and parts.

All rights, including copyrighting, remain with the composer.

Open to all composers except current Ithaca College faculty.
Prize:

Cash prize of $1,000, with a performance in the spring of 2009. The composer will be notified
of the performance date well in advance.

The winning composition will be published by Lyceum Press, unless the composer has made prior
arrangements with another publisher.

Lyceum Press reserves the option to publish any of the compositions selected as finalists.

The Ithaca College Trombone Troupe has the option of withholding the award if no entry is found to be
suitable.
Submission and Return Guidelines:

A sealed envelope with the name and address of the composer should be affixed to the title page of
the score. The date of the composition must appear on the title page.

The composer's name must not appear on the score or the CD.

All entries must be received by the committee chair not later than 8 December 2006. Entries
received after that date will not be considered.

The winning composition will be selected and the composer notified not later than 1 March 2008.

All precautions will be taken to ensure that manuscripts and CDs are returned safely. Ithaca
College and the Trombone Troupe do not assume responsibility for loss or damage in transit. A
self-addressed stamped mailer must be included for return.
