Program Learning Goals

Prepare to embark on a career in public health or earn a degree that prepares you to pursue graduate education in clinical practice.

Welcome to the Department of Health Sciences and Public Health

Our department prepares you to take an active role in the field of medicine, engage in clinical practice in the health sciences, and promote public health in community settings.

We are committed to six student learning outcomes that reflect our values:

  • Ecological Sustainability
  • Honor Human Differences
  • Ethical Reasoning
  • Analytical Skills
  • Critical Thinking
  • Civic Engagement

Our emphasis on health science and medicine along with practice and advocacy prepares you to play a critical role in transforming healthcare. You will apply what you learn in the classroom to fieldwork and research experiences. The development of critical theoretical knowledge and skills enables you to be job ready for professional practice or prepared for graduate school entry.

Undergraduate Majors

We offer two majors for undergraduates, responsive to the wide range of interests that students have in the health professions field.

The health science major offers two concentrations: premedical concentration and planned clinical concentration.  These concentrations will position you for future success in areas such as direct patient care (chiropractor, nurse practitioner, physician, physician assistant, dietician, nutrition educator, occupational therapy or physical therapy) or clinical research.

The public health major prepares graduates to improve human health through using knowledge and skills to prevent diseases and injuries, protect the public from harm, and promote health throughout the state, nation and around the world. Public Health is a field that provides many rewarding career opportunities. You can enter the workforce upon graduation or pursue further specialized study in graduate school.
