Study Abroad Financials

Students will be billed through their Ithaca College student account for Ithaca College tuition, study abroad insurance, group flight ticket & IC-arranged housing (if students opt-in), and any course-related fees that may apply. Institutional, federal and/or state financial aid is eligible to apply towards these costs and will automatically be posted to the student's account. Payment for any outstanding balance should be submitted to Ithaca College. 

ITHACA COLLEGE SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS (SUMMER/WINTER/SPRING BREAK) 

Students will be billed for participation on their Ithaca College accounts. Any financial aid will automatically be posted to the student account. Payment should be submitted to Ithaca College for all billable program-related expenses before the date of departure for your program. 

EXCHANGE PROGRAMS 

Students participating in exchange programs will be billed for regular IC tuition via their Ithaca College account, as well as the mandatory international health insurance coverage. All other costs (housing, food, etc.) will be paid directly in the host country in most cases. Occasionally, housing costs will be billed by and paid to Ithaca College for select exchange programs. Most institutional, federal and/or state financial aid should be eligible to apply towards these costs, depending on the type of aid received, and will be automatically posted to the student's account. Payment for any outstanding balance should be submitted to Ithaca College.

AFFILIATED PROGRAMS 

Students should be able to apply some or most of their institutional, federal and/or state financial aid package to the total cost of a semester abroad, depending on the type of aid they are eligible to receive. Aid will be automatically posted to the student's Ithaca College account. 

Affiliated partners will bill students directly for housing, meals (if included in the program), and miscellaneous fees (e.g., flight, visa services, excursions, course materials, supplemental or upgraded housing and/or meal fees, etc.). Bills received from the affiliate should be paid directly to the affiliate. All payments for charges appearing on the Ithaca College bill should be submitted to Ithaca College. 

Students studying on Tier 1 Affiliated programs will be billed by Ithaca College for the following charges:

• Ithaca College tuition
• International health insurance charges, as determined by the affiliated program, may include insurance managed by the program and Ithaca College insurance. This is especially true for programs that lack crucial provisions, such as emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains. Additionally, some programs incorporate the required insurance into their fee structure, eliminating any separate charge for insurance.
   

Students studying on Tier 2 Affiliated programs will be billed by Ithaca College for the following:

• Ithaca College tuition
• International health insurance charges, as determined by the affiliated program, may include insurance managed by the program and Ithaca College insurance. This is especially true for programs that lack crucial provisions, such as emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains. Additionally, some programs incorporate the required insurance into their fee structure, eliminating any separate charge for insurance.
• Tier 2 Study Abroad fee. This fee differs for every student and uses the student’s institutional aid and the affiliated program’s tuition to determine the billed amount. International Programs can work with students to help them determine the approximate study abroad fee for any given Tier 2 Affiliated Program.

NOTE: Financial aid will NOT be forwarded to an affiliated program until all outstanding balances on your account have been paid in full. If you have any questions, please call the Office of Student Financial Services at (607) 274-3131. 

NON-AFFILIATED PROGRAMS 

Students studying on non-affiliated programs will be billed directly by the non-affiliated program provider for all charges. Ithaca College will also bill a $415 (semester program) or $200 (summer/winter program) Study Abroad Administrative Fee.  Specific support services covered by the study abroad administrative fee include:

• Guidance from International Programs and one-on-one support from the time that we learn of a student’s intent to study abroad through the return home and beyond;
• Individualized advising about required study abroad requirements including the credit transfer process, financial aid/payment processes, and residential life matters;
• Study abroad orientation meetings are held before departure for study abroad experience.  These meetings assist the student in preparing for international travel, living abroad and the challenges presented by this experience, as well as Ithaca College logistics regarding study abroad pre-departure requirements;
• Emergency support and direct assistance should any adverse events (terrorist events, natural disasters, etc.) occur in the country in which the student is studying;
• Support and assistance from IC offices including (but not limited to) Student Financial Services, Registrar, Dean’s Offices, Academic Advising Center, Residential Life, Student Accessibility Services and Health Center/CAPS.

As a non-affiliated program participant, students must take a leave of absence from Ithaca College if studying abroad during a semester.  Students on non-affiliated programs are not eligible for IC scholarships and grants. Federal financial aid may apply if the student is eligible, and the program is offered through a Title IV-eligible institution. (International Programs and/or Student Financial Services will help determine if the program can receive Title IV funds.)

Students who intend to apply federal aid towards the cost of a study abroad program should subtract the amount of the anticipated federal financial aid award from the total bill and submit payment for the balance to the study abroad program. Students should send a copy of the bill to the Office of Student Financial Services at Ithaca College along with proof of the payment that was sent to the study abroad program. Ithaca College will then forward any applicable financial aid to the study abroad program.

Please note that financial aid is not disbursed until the end of the add-drop period in any given semester and financial aid will NOT be forwarded to a non-affiliated program until all outstanding balances on your account have been paid in full.
