How did you choose your major?

I chose my major ultimately by allowing myself to take time figuring out what it is I loved! I started by looking at all the classes that I had taken so far that I enjoyed and looked for any commonalities between them. I then used the pluses and minuses assignment to help me narrow down which majors to explore further and then picked classes for the following semester in those majors- after that I took the classes I loved most and talked to my professors about a variety of departments and ended up combing two because I just couldn’t decide!

What was your favorite resource to use when you were an Exploratory student?

My favorite resource to use as an exploratory student was the strong interest survey and the “WCYDWAMI” tab. I had taken a tons and tons of self-interest quizzes and the past and was originally skeptical about this one but the results were so descriptive and thought out based on not just my likes and dislikes but my morals and values as well. This quiz served as a GREAT starting point to figuring out what area of study I might want to explore further. My absolute favorite tool is the “what can you do with a major in” resource on the exploratory page. I wanted to know that I wasn’t just going to love the classes I was taking but also wanted to ensure that I would love where I would end up as an end result! I highly encourage everyone to check out what their future options can be! Most majors open more doors than many people believe.

What do you like most about the Exploratory program?

My favorite part about the exploratory program is the encouragement and support given by faculty and staff across campus to help you find what you love- everyone is there to help and wants you to succeed and it’s nice to feel like you are not alone in such a daunting process

What is your biggest piece of advice to other Exploratory students?

My biggest piece of advice to exploratory students is to BREATHE! You have time to figure this all out and it is completely normal to not know what you want to study yet! I can’t emphasize that enough. Use your time effectively and PLEASE take advantage of the resources available to you but there is no reason to ever panic about the fact that you don’t have a clear path yet. The power of yet is all you need 😊

What extracurricular activities are you involved with on campus?

On campus I am an RA in West Tower, I work for campus center and event services, I am an exploratory peer mentor, an ICSM peer leader, a general body member of Active minds and a member of the SYM panel committee, am involved in IC PRSSA and in IC Women in Communications.
