Pursue Your Research Interests

Use research to apply classroom learning to study a topic of interest more in-depth.

Students and faculty travel every year to the Association of Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Annual Convention where they represent Ithaca College and present on their research work from the past year. They also have an opportunity to network with other speech-language-hearing professionals.

Samantha Watts ('19)

Oral proficiency affects social, academic, business, and personal opportunities. Samantha Watts ('19) and Morgan McLenithan ('19) shared the results of their research, guided by Marie Sanford, Clinical Associate Professor, at the 2019 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention. The student clinicians highlighted their work with the Ithaca College Communication Enhancement Program for Accent Modification (CEPAM) which targets oral proficiency in American English phonetic inventory, while exhibiting respect of cultural diversity. Students work with ELL/ESL students in small group sessions and use the PHOTOvoice method to develop oral proficiency skills.

Skott Jones, Associate Professor, and Jenna Abrahamsen ('18), Danielle Edelstein ('18), and Jenna Supinski ('18).

Approximately 8-9% of children exhibit speech sound disorders. Research suggests that targeting sounds in dense words with high word frequency can lead to greater accuracy on both treated and untreated words. The present study created a comprehensive database of stimuli for "The Late 8", the most commonly treated sounds in English.
