Communication Disorders Minor

Eligibility

The communications disorders minor is open to students majoring in all disciplines except those majoring in speech-language pathology. 

Overview of Course Requirements

All students in the communication disorders minor must take 18 credits of courses within the minor, which includes:

  • the 3-credit SLPA-15000 Introduction to Communication Disorders course; and 
  • at least 15 credits of SLPA coursework which includes:
    • at least 3 credits of any disorder course offered within the minor
    • needed remaining credits from our designated SLPA elective course list

Note that students using the communication disorders minor to fulfill the CLA requirements should carefully review course designations to ensure they are taking courses that satisfy CLA requirements. Please refer to the Ithaca College Undergraduate Catalog for the specific requirements for the minor. 

How to Apply for the Communication Disorders Minor

  1. Contact Dr. Lynne Hewitt, Department Chair and Communication Disorders Minor advisor, at lhewitt@ithaca.edu, to schedule an appointment to discuss the minor. 

  2. Submit IC Workflow request.

Deaf Studies Minor

Eligibility

The minor in deaf studies is open to students majoring in all disciplines, however seats are limited. Students are accepted after their application is submitted based on course availability.

Overview of Course Requirements

This minor requires a minimum of 15 credits. This includes completing American Sign Language I, II, and III as well as Deaf Culture and Perspectives on Deafness. Note that students using the communication disorders minor to fulfill the CLA requirements should carefully review course designations to ensure they are taking courses that satisfy CLA requirements. Please refer to the Ithaca College Undergraduate Catalog for the specific requirements for the minor.

  • NOTE: Students who have previously taken ASL I or the equivalent may take our placement test to determine whether they might be able to place in ASL II. Contact Mr. Kip Opperman, kopperman@ithaca.edu, for further information and to schedule an appointment to take the test. 

How to Apply for the Deaf Studies Minor

  1. Complete ASL I (SLPA-10901)  

  2. GPA of 3.0 or higher    

  3. Contact the department administrative assistant, Julie Chambers, jchambers@ithaca.edu to schedule an appointment with the Deaf Studies Minor Advisor.

  4. Submit IC Workflow request  

  5. After receiving approval of workflow request, enroll in ASL III
