Violin Audition Requirements - Undergraduate

Degree Page: Composition (BM)

Note: audition only required for instrumental emphasis (private lesson) consideration

  1. Two contrasting works from the standard violin repertoire. Playing from memory on at least one work is preferred.
  2. Étude or study
  3. Three-octave scales and arpeggios in major and melodic minor in two or more keys
  4. Sight-reading

Degree Page: Music (BA)

  1. Two contrasting works from the standard violin repertoire. Playing from memory on at least one work is preferred.

Degree Page: Music Education (BM)

  1. First movement of a standard violin concerto, played from memory, including cadenza if applicable

  5. Sight-reading

Degree Page: Performance and Music Education (BM)

  1. First movement of a standard violin concerto, played from memory, including cadenza if applicable
  2. Two contrasting movements from solo J. S. Bach sonatas and partitas
  3. Étude or study
  4. Three-octave scales and arpeggios in major and melodic minor
  5. Sight-reading

Degree Page: Sound Recording Technology (BM)

Note: applicants must submit a pre-screen audition recording (review requirements)

  1. Two contrasting works from the standard violin repertoire. Playing from memory on at least one work is preferred.

Violin Audition Requirements - Graduate

Degree Page: Performance (MM)

Candidates must exhibit the equivalent preparation to that required for the Bachelor of Music in Performance at Ithaca College and give evidence of being equipped to perform successful recitals during the period of study for the degree program.

Prepare the following for a 20-minute audition:

  1. Two contrasting movements from a standard concerto from memory with cadenza (if the movement has a cadenza).
  2. Two contrasting movements of unaccompanied Bach from memory.
  3. One etude or caprice (from Paganini, Kreutzer, Dont, Rode, Fiorillo, Dancla, or Gavinies).

Degree Page: Music Education (MM, MS)

Candidates must exhibit the equivalent preparation to that required for the Bachelor of Music in Performance at Ithaca College and give evidence of being equipped to perform successful recitals during the period of study for the degree program.

Prepare the following for a 20-minute audition:

  1. Two contrasting movements from a standard concerto from memory with cadenza (if the movement has a cadenza).
