Clarinet Audition Requirements

Degree Page: B.M. Composition

Additional Application Requirements:

  1. Two (2) scores of original works (with sound files, if possible). 

Audition Requirements:

  1. Approximately 15 minutes of music -- two (2) or three (3) works in contrasting styles.
  2. Major and melodic minor scales from memory.
  3. Sight-reading.

Interview Requirements:

  1. Speak with a member of our Composition faculty and ask any specific questions you may have about the Composition degree program.

NOTE: Students who have had bass clarinet as their primary instrument in high school may play one piece on bass as long as the other is played on soprano clarinet. Students may also play their scales on either instrument.

Degree Page: B.A. Music

Degree Page: B.M. Music in Combination with an Outside Field

Audition Requirements:

  1. Approximately 15 minutes of music -- two (2) or three (3) works in contrasting styles.
  2. Major and melodic minor scales from memory.
  3. Sight-reading.

Audition Requirements:

  1. At least two (2) movements of a multi-movement work from the standard clarinet repertoire, such as concerti or concertinos by Crusell, Krommer, Mozart, Spohr, Stamitz, Tartini, Weber, and sonatas and sonatinas by Arnold, Bernstein, Brahms, Hindemith, Perry, Poulenc, Smith, Saint-Saëns, etc.
  2. One (1) shorter work in contrasting style, (e.g., a movement from a larger piece, an étude, or a shorter piece) such as Cavallini Adagio and Tarantella, Finzi Five Bagatelles, Miguel del Águila Pacific Serenade, Dorothy Rudd Moore Night Fantasy, Marie Elizabeth von Sachesen-Meiningen Romanze, or works for clarinet alone by Brandon, Martin, Osborne, Tailleferre, any of the Solos de Concours, works by Cahuzac, Bozza, and Jeanjean, and études by Baermann, Bedoya, Cavallini, D'Rivera, Hite Melodious and Progressive Studies, Polatschek, Rose, Uhl, etc.
  3. Major and melodic minor scales from memory (minimum two (2) octaves); chromatic scale (from low E, minimum three (3) octaves).
  4. Sight-reading.

Pre-screen Requirements:

  1. Two (2) pieces of contrasting styles.
  2. Three (3) scales and arpeggios of your choosing.

  1. Approximately 15 minutes of music -- two (2) or three (3) works in contrasting styles.
  2. Major and melodic minor scales from memory.
  3. Sight-reading.

  2. Major and melodic minor scales from memory.
  3. Sight-reading.
