2019–20

Every year IC jazz studies creates a list of ten standards which all jazz students at Ithaca College must thoroughly internalize (the melody, chords, and often with the lyrics and in all 12 keys as possible, and completely memorized). These songs are subsequently used as study material for jazz repertoire and jazz arranging classes, and are played in private jazz lessons, combos, ensembles and jam sessions.

For each song, be aware of the primary source. In order to do that, you need to research the songwriter. If the composer is from the "Great American Songbook" (Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin or Irving Berlin, for a few examples) your primary source for the song is the published sheet music -- not the real book, and not any single jazz performer's version (as great as they may be).

Note that the list has 10 primary tunes where each tune as a member of a distinct category of tunes. These tunes really are standard standards that every jazz student should know. However, each category has alternate tunes so that if you already know primary tune in that category REALLY well (in other words, fully memorized, in all 12 keys, done it for years, etc.) you can then begin work on a different tune from the “alternate” list.
