Pi Kappa Lambda is the national honor society for music belonging to the Association of College Honor Societies. The society recognizes and encourages the highest level of musical achievement and academic scholarship. Some prominent musicians of the 20th century who were named honorary members of Pi Kappa Lambda include Karel Husa, Samuel Barber, Lucien Cailliet, Aaron Copland, and Robert Shaw. Juniors, seniors, and graduate students in the top percentage of their class are considered for membership by faculty members of PKL in the spring. Additionally, the chapter selects the outstanding member of the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes and honors them at the initiation and awards banquet at the end of the school year. Ithaca College’s chapter, Alpha Nu, was established in 1956.
