Design Your Course

The staff from Learning & Innovative Technologies (L&IT) and the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE), along with campus partners, invite faculty to join us for Canvas support open hours and workshops.

We request that you have some knowledge of Canvas, either prior experience, using the guides and/or videos in the Canvas Community, or through one of the recommended self-paced learning paths such as the Growing with Canvas course. These sessions are not meant to be basic Canvas training topics.

All workshops will be led by Marilyn Dispensa, Senior Instructional Designer, Center for Faculty Excellence

Using the IC Canvas Blueprint to Design your Canvas Course (1 + 1/2 hour Q&A)

In this session, participants will learn how to use IC Canvas Course Blueprint, which is a course template that has been applied to all Fall 2021 Canvas Course shells. Participants leaving this session will have their Home Page started and at least one Module set up in their course.  Even if you choose not to use the Blueprint you will come away with a good understanding of designing the presentation of your Canvas site using Pages and Modules. Various tips and tricks will be shared and there will be ample time to make progress on your Fall courses.

Intended audience: Faculty who want to learn about using the blueprint to design their Canvas courses.

Prerequisites: Some experience with Canvas or having gone through the first 3 modules of the “Growing with Canvas Course.”

Building a Canvas Course for the Minimalist (1 +1/2 hour Q&A)

In this session, participants will learn the basics of getting a simple no-frills Canvas site up and running.  We’ll work through a Plan, Build, Publish process so that you can be confident that you will be ready by semester startup. This is a working session so you will work along some guided prompts to make progress to your published Canvas course site that helps your students.

Intended Audience: Faculty who want to use Canvas to share course material and use a few of the tools such as Assignments and Announcements.

Prerequisite: You should have logged into Canvas and authenticated with Duo. A draft syllabus.
