Mini-Grant Highlight -- Water = Life

The Sustainability Mini-Grant allowed me to continue work on a course I have been gradually developing called Water = Life. It is an interdisciplinary course that is designed to develop insight and appreciation for this essential element and its effect on sustainability from the perspectives of the arts, humanities and sciences.

The grant enabled me to explore various means of online delivery such as videocasts, podcasts, guest lecturers and discussions that link students and experts. It also helped me research and recruit guest experts to present to the class online. The members of EcoVillage and the Environment Studies program at Ithaca College were very helpful in providing leads for these experts. The grant also led to me giving a presentation on the Floating Classroom on Lake Cayuga at the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF) at Ithaca College.

The online course was offered in the summer through the Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies at Ithaca College. There are eight guest experts with local, national and international perspectives on water issues. Students will access film clips, book excerpts, powerpoint presentations and articles online from each expert and myself, then have discussions with the experts. Since the class is online and asynchronous, students can do it at any time from anywhere with high speed internet access.
