Campus COVID-19 Alert Status

The college has instituted these color code alerts to help inform our students, faculty, and staff of how our operational status may be impacted based on our testing positivity rate.

What This Color Code Means

An explanation for each color status is outlined below. Please note that these protocols are subject to modification as state or local conditions require and in consultation with the Tompkins County Health Department.

What does it mean for campus?

Cases are infrequent or sporadic and transmission controlled.

What to expect:

  • Academics: Face-to-face
  • AT/OT/PT/SLPA Clinics: Permitted for approved-to-access campus populations.
  • IT Labs and other on-campus IT services:  IT Labs open.
  • Athletics: Permitted, following sport medicine guidelines. Competition determined by Liberty League and local conditions.
  • Fitness Center/Wellness Clinic: Permitted for approved-to-access campus populations and with restrictions.
  • Research: Permitted, with IRB approval and possible restrictions.
  • Residential Halls and Apartments: Socializing permitted; visitors allowed with face coverings
  • Social Gatherings: Permitted, in compliance with NYS gathering guidelines.
  • Travel out of Tompkins County:  Students & Employees permitted
  • Travel into Tompkins County from Guests/Visitors: No restrictions
  • Vendors and contractors: Normal operations

Yellow: Low to Moderate Risk

What does it mean for campus?

Incidence of the virus remains low overall, but indicators show increases in transmission in particular campus populations or activities. Operational activities may be restricted or suspended based on the extent to which they are identified as contributing to transmission.

What to expect:

  • Academics: Face-to-face; hybrid; or online
  • AT/OT/PT/SLPA Clinics: Permitted for approved-to-access campus populations and with restrictions.
  • IT Labs and other on-campus IT services:  IT Labs open with reduced capacity.
  • Athletics: Permitted, following sport medicine guidelines. Competition may be re-evaluated by Liberty League or based on local conditions on a sport-by-sport basis. 
  • Fitness Center/Wellness Clinic: for approved-to-access campus populations and with restrictions.
  • Research: Permitted, with IRB approval and restrictions.
  • Residential Halls and Apartments: Residential student visits within rooms on same floor or across floors may be re-evaluated depending upon conditions. 
  • Social Gatherings: Fewer than 10 people, with face coverings and physical distancing.
  • Travel out of Tompkins County: Students: Encouraged to stay within Ithaca Area. Employee work-related travel, with VP approval.
  • Travel into Tompkins County from Guests/Visitors: No, please.
  • Vendors and contractors: Limited, with VP approval.

Orange: Moderate Risk

What does it mean for campus?

Incidence has increased substantially, is more widespread, and the New York State Supplemental Guidance threshold of testing positivity rates exceeding 5.0% over a rolling 14-day period has been reached.

What to expect:

  • Academics: Remote from Ithaca area. Residential students remain in halls/apartments. Off-campus students remain off-campus in independent living arrangements.
  • AT/OT/PT/SLPA Clinics: Closed.
  • IT Labs and other on-campus IT services:  Labs accessible only for urgent student academic needs. Essential IT services maintained.
  • Athletics: Suspend activities. 
  • Fitness Center/Wellness Clinic: Closed.
  • Research: Suspend activities.
  • Residential Halls and Apartments: Students must remain in rooms except for meal retrieval or solitary outdoor exercise (unless College determines this must be restricted). Common areas closed.
  • Social Gatherings: Not permitted.
  • Travel out of Tompkins County: No, please.
  • Travel into Tompkins County from Guests/Visitors: No, please.
  • Vendors and contractors: Limited to essential services, with VP approval.

Red: Higher Risk

What does it mean for campus?

Positivity rate continues to rise or remains high and/or concerns related to available quarantine, isolation and/or local hospital capacity.

What to expect:

  • Academics: Remote. Residential students return to permanent address.
  • AT/OT/PT/SLPA Clinics: Closed.
  • IT Labs and other on-campus IT services:  Closed. Essential IT services maintained.
  • Athletics: Suspend activities. 
  • Fitness Center/Wellness Clinic: Closed.
  • Research: Suspend activities.
  • Residential Halls and Apartments: Closed.
  • Social Gatherings: Not permitted.
  • Travel out of Tompkins County: Suspended.
  • Travel into Tompkins County from Guests/Visitors: No, please.
  • Vendors and contractors: Limited to essential services, with VP approval.
