My favorite quotes from FLEFF so far.

If you have attended one of our many online events so far, you may have noticed a very active chat window.

The chat at every single FLEFF event is full of bios, links, and quotes. The FLEFF Team rapidly transcribes bits and pieces of the discussion in the Zoom chat box.

The words coming out of this festival will stick with me for a long time. Here are some of my favorites:

“It was not just making art—it was therapy for us.”

Leslie García

This was said during the launch of Entangled Infiltrations, this year’s new media exhibition. García is a member of Aero-sol-nauts, who created Travelling Time: Aerosol Wormholes.

The discussion centered around creating art during and about a pandemic. I was struck by the fact that the artists in the new media exhibition all found ways to make something positive out of it. Art can heal us.

“This is a broken society film.”

Nance Ackerman

Ackerman, co-writer and co-director of Conviction, declared this during the film’s weekend talkback. Conviction is a documentary about the rising number of women in prison and what could be done to alter the trajectory of these women’s lives.

The issues in the film go beyond just prisons. People often focus on rehabilitation and transition programs after prison, but what can we do to ensure that these women do not end up there in the first place?

“If we had filled all of NASA with Neil Armstrong, we would not have been able to go to the Moon.”

Tracy Minish

Minish, who is legally blind, has spent 35 years working for NASA’s Manned Flight Programs. Last Friday, he spoke at the Disability, Outer Space, and Artificial Intelligence roundtable with Ann Michel, Phil Wilde, and John Robinson.

These words highlight the importance of different perspectives in any environment, whether it is a workplace, classroom, or Zoom meeting.

With one week remaining, I encourage you to listen carefully and write down your own favorite quotes. You may find words that inspire you as much as these inspired me.
