Project Description: Our NSF-funded research project investigates the ways students watch and learn from instructional calculus videos. As part of the project, we have created short instructional videos and had several hundred students watch them on a website that lets us track how students interact with the videos and how they solve calculus problems before and after watching the videos. We have also had a small number of students participate in interviews in which we used an eye tracker to record which parts of the videos they focused on and also asked students to describe their thought process as they worked on the calculus problems. There are several ways for students to work on this research project, including doing statistical analyses of the large data sets, analyzing eye movement data, and describing the participants’ thought processes based on interview transcripts.
