First year students are to take the placement test online in the summer before they come to Ithaca College. Spanish, French and German placement tests are available online. Italian, Hebrew and Latin will need to be scheduled with the Modern Languages & Literatures Department during orientation. Students who have studied Mandarin Chinese or Arabic and wish to continue in that language will need to contact the instructors, Hong Li, Chinese, (Hli2@Ithaca.edu and Faten Houissa, Arabic, (Fhouissa@ithaca.edu) for assessment.
Students who need to demonstrate proficiency in a language for a major/program must take the placement test either during orientation or the first few weeks of classes as they need to also demonstrate proficiency in person. If a student has a language requirement for a major/minor, etc., they can simply take the placement test online AND register for the course in which they are placed.
Placement/proficiency exams are given Monday through Friday, 8:00 am, 9:00 am, 10:00 am, 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Please contact the Modern Languages and Literatures Department at 607-274-3106 or email Tina Bennett at email@example.com.
