Ithaca Graduate Jennifer Parker Awarded Grant

On October 25, Purnell's new math teacher, Jennifer Parker learned that she was one of only fifteen first- or second-year teachers in the country to be chosen for the Texas Instruments/New Teacher Center Online Mentorship program. Despite the program's stated preference for teachers primarily in Florida, Illinois, Ohio, New York and Texas, Parker's application and proposed work with her Purnell students won the selection committee's approval. Encouraged to apply by one of her University of Rochester professors, Parker was excited to learn that she will not only have the opportunity to be mentored by a veteran geometry teacher online, but that Texas Instruments will be donating twelve TI-Nspire™ handhelds including software licensing. Parker explains that this is no regular calculator, acting more like a computer so lessons can be programmed right into the device, really adding a dimension of individualization to the mathematics classroom. "It's almost going to be like the students have a video game in their hands. It's going to make math so dynamic," said Parker, who will now, with this award, also have funding to attend one of Texas Instruments' T³ (Teachers Teaching with Technology) Conferences later this year.*
