Exploratory Peer Ambassadors and Leaders
How did you choose your major?
Choosing my major was definitely a process of trial and error that I do not recommend. For one I came in with a major Theater Arts Management and changed it before add/drop week was even over. For my first semester of was a Theater Production Arts and Design major. This did not go so well. I switched to Exploratory for the spring and figure out what I really wanted. During that time a fell back in love with education. Ithaca College does not offer an education major so I add the minor and ended up picking history because it was a broad topic that fascinated me. Plus, I get to read a lot of old books!
What was your favorite resource to use when you were an Exploratory student?
While this is not a resource for just Exploratory students it was my go to on campus resources and still is: the academic advising center. The experts in the office know just about everything that has to do with the academics at IC and they know how make that knowledge useful information. I had multiple meetings with the office during my semester as an exploratory student and still pop in when I need some school related guidance.
What do you like most about the Exploratory program?
I really like the built in community that comes with the Exploratory program. Ithaca College is by no means a large school, but for me, coming from a high school with 315 students in total, it was intimidating. Also when I left the theater department I was worried that I was going to lose the small community I had just met. The exploratory program quickly took the place of the theater department for me, and it was really wonderful to have relaxed events to go to and meet people on a similar journey that I was on.
What is your biggest piece of advice to other Exploratory students?
Its ok to feel lost. That feeling won’t last forever, but while you feel it, don’t be afraid of it. Everything about college can feel so permeant and yet so temporary. Its something that almost every college student feels. While college is only 4 years (on average) you’ve got time to figure things out. Let yourself be lost for a little while. It will be ok
What extracurricular activities are you involved with on campus?
I’m currently a Peer Success Coach for the Academic Advising Center and a President’s Host. As well as being the Technical Director on the e-board of Macabre Theater Enable and a Co-Educational Liaison for DEAR@IC (Disability Education, Awareness, and Recourses @ Ithaca College).
