|Dean's award in Recreation and Leisure Studies|
Growing up in a town called Weymouth on the south shore of Massachusetts, I had one thing I looked forward to all year long – summer camp. It played a key role in my development. Although It took me a long time to realize that I could shape my career around this passion I always knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life providing these same types of impactful, educational, and recreational experiences to youth. So when I found out that a degree like recreation management existed at Ithaca College I immediately took advantage of the opportunity.
I grew tremendously during my time at Ithaca College. Many different aspects of the college experience played a role in shaping who I am. However one particularly unique experience I would have gotten nowhere else but Ithaca was the Wilderness Immersion Semester Program. I spent nearly an entire semester outside mostly in the backcountry of Colorado, California, and Utah taking classes that blended traditional academic rigor with outdoor adventure technical skills in a group setting that facilitated personal reflection and growth. It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
