First-Year Composition

Writing is a critical foundation for success in college and beyond. This foundation begins with a first-year composition course (unless you have received credit for this requirement by scoring a 4 or 5 on the AP examination in English literature and composition or English language and composition).

A first-year composition course will show you how to develop strong arguments with supporting information to back up your claims. You will gain the ability to analyze and summarize multiple viewpoints from researched sources. You will also learn to determine the needs of your audience, think critically while you draft and revise, and observe standard academic writing conventions.
