IC athletic hall of famer Tony Wise '73 came back to the South Hill this fall for a three-day tutoring session with the football Bombers' offensive line. Wise had played football, lacrosse, and hockey at Ithaca; current football head coach Mike Welch '73 had not only been his classmate and football teammate, but the two were also fellow physical education majors and members of the same fraternity.

His old friend and the team felt fortunate to share the expertise of such a football dynamo. Ithaca offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio '97 told the Ithacan that Wise's presence helped keep the players focused and attentive.

Wise coached at several colleges before signing on at powerhouse University of Pittsburgh to work under the legendary Jimmy Johnson. He followed Johnson to Oklahoma State and the University of Miami, where the Hurricanes won a national title in 1987. When Johnson moved to the NFL in 1989 to replace Tom Landry as the Dallas Cowboys coach, Wise joined his staff; the team won the Super Bowl in 1992. Wise then moved to the Chicago Bears, working under head coach Dave Wannstedt. A two-year stint with the Carolina Panthers under George Seifert followed before he moved to the Miami Dolphins, again working for Wannstedt. He left the Dolphins after last season when Wannstedt was let go; Wise is contemplating his next career move.

Despite his many Division I triumphs and 15 successful years in the NFL, Wise says he is still a Bomber at heart. He told the team that he follows them closely, rooting for his alma mater to win another Stagg Bowl, the Division III national championship.

Football Season Results (to November 19)
