School of Music faculty Wendy Herbener Mehne, flute, and Vadim Serebryany, piano, with Kirsten Marshall, violin, were recently named finalists in this year’s Piazzolla International Competition for their live performance of Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion and La Muerto del Angel on a Cayuga Chamber Orchestra chamber music concert. This competition took place to honor Astor Piazzolla’s music and the centennial celebration of his birth year under the auspices of the Fundación Astor Piazzolla and with the involvement of the composer’s family. The distinguished panel of judges included Pablo Ziegler, Grammy-winning pianist, composer and former member of the Astor Piazzolla quintet, and Daniel Binelli, Grammy-nominated bandoneonist and composer, who performed with Astor Piazzolla as a member of his Sexteto Nuevo Tango.
