Students in the Department of Theatre Arts at Ithaca College join together every year to produce a cabaret to benefit Wheels for Women-- an organization born out of professor Kathleen Mulligan's Fulbright project in Kerala, India in 2010. Wheels for Women partners with the Sakhi Shelter for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and the sex trade in the city of Ernakulum. Funds raised by the students support job training for shelter residents, helping them to move towards financial independence and away from their abusers. The organization also contributes to the goal of building a permanent home for the shelter-- a refuge for women and their children.
This year is our 11th anniversary! To date, Wheels for Women has raised over $55,000 for the Sakhi Shelter, and trained 25 women as auto-rickshaw (taxi) drivers. This incredible success is the result of the efforts of many Theatre Arts students and alumni of Ithaca College, as well as friends from Hope Summer Repertory Theatre in Holland, MI.
