As part of the annual tradition, Ithaca College students in the Business School’s innovative ITHACON course have been selected as guest columnists for With Further Ado, published on Pop Culture Squad.
Students of MGMT 29800, Creating and Managing Conventions, the class which recently planned, publicized, and managed ITHACON, the nation’s second longest running comic convention, were given an unusual assignment – to write a column as part of a competition.
Instructor Ed Catto, who writes the long-running weekly With Further Ado column, leverages this platform to explore the convergence of entrepreneurism and pop culture. Bob Harrison, the editor of Pop Culture Squad, as an impartial judge (and recent ITHACON attendee guest) selected the most insightful and innovative student entries.
“I’m impressed by these students as they embrace entrepreneurism, opportunity and pop culture in this assignment - and in managing ITHACON all semester long,” said Ed Catto, an instructor in Ithaca College’s School of Business and the creator/writer of With Further Ado.
The four winning students are:
- 3rd Runner-Up Maddy Tanzman provided a personal story about fan girl revelations
- 2nd Runner- Up Ana Tressel explored the connections between fandom and Broadway Musicals

This unique course, providing both traditional learning and hands-on opportunities for tradeshows, is part of the Business School’s new Entrepreneurship and Innovation minor. Taught by Ed Catto, the ITHACON course focuses on entrepreneurial strategies and tactics for leveraging and understanding conventions.
