ITHACA, NY, May 10 – Diverse issues in intellectual property, social media, music, big data, abortion, migrant labor, and free speech were the central focus of discovery in a course offered by the Roy H Park School of Communications at Ithaca College.

The Government & Media course examines the American legal and policy-making systems so that young professionals can gain an understanding of how laws address a range of issues. Topical discussions included but were not limited to freedom of speech and press, courts of law, defamation, libel, prior restraint, privacy, the public’s right to know, and intellectual property. “In this course, we review the principles underlying relevant media law and court cases with an emphasis on jurisdiction and precedents,” says Ann-Marie Adams, instructor of the course.

Ten project teams were assigned during the semester to engage in research, perform case law analysis, conduct individual investigative work, establish promotion/publicity around legal content, and process a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to frame a podcast series. The students present this series as an ethical and case law analysis focused on identifying issue areas or presenting the evidence or facts that pertain to issues in law.
