As part of Ithaca Pride Week, Ithaca College LGBTQ Center staff will guide this in-person walking tour. We'll offer brief historic stories and narration as we visit select sites in downtown Ithaca pointing out our rich local LGBTQ history and happenings that played important roles in our local community and in our nation. June 28, 5 pm, meet on the Commons outside Center Ithaca, 171 E. State Street in downtown Ithaca.
Plan for an experience of about 60 minutes, that will take place on flat terrain along the sometimes uneven sidewalks and occasionally bustling street crossings of downtown Ithaca. Our route is a loop and the final tour stop will conveniently leave tour guests at the same place we started on the Commons.
We invite you to start with us and decide the level of involvement in terms of time and energy that works best for you. We'll also provide some quick tips on how to use the Pocket Sights app where the full self-guided version of our tour is always available 24/7 for anyone to take on their own, and its features that can be customized by each user for an individualized experience.
Bring water, a hat, sunscreen, weather gear and any other items that will make your experience more enjoyable. Be sure to bring your curiosity and questions too.
The tour will take place rain or shine, unless dangerous weather threatens. We hope people will join us as we take to the streets to rediscover and continue to create our history.
The full tour was created by Ithaca College students in collaboration with IC's LGBTQ Center. It received a Historic Ithaca Preservation Award, and is the recipient of the 2022 American Historical Association Committee on LGBT History Allan Bérubé Prize for outstanding work in public or community-based lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer history.
