IC Welcomes Alex Shevrin Venet for 2023 Spring Lecture

Ithaca College's Department of Education is pleased to resume the equity-focused Spring Lecture Series and Community Read.  This year, the College is sponsoring a lecture by Alex Shevrin Venet, author of Equity-Centered Trauma-Informed Education.

The lecture will be held in the Klingenstein Lounge of the IC Campus Center at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 27th. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Venet is a practitioner and professional development facilitator who draws on her experience in schools to advance trauma-informed practice perspectives. She centers equity in this work. Her advice is both global and concrete, and her recent book is a deeply accessible text that pushes readers to consider trauma at a systems-level.

The lecture will help us to consider new ways of conceptualizing trauma-informed practice and to envision how such practices advance equity. Venet will highlight the concept of "unconditional positive regard" and its potential in educational settings. It is not necessary to have read the book before the lecture.

The lecture series and Community Read are supported by the Department of Education and a Clynes Collaboration Grant from Tompkins Trust. Previous speakers in the series have included Jason Reynolds (2021), Bettina Love (2019), and Carla Shalaby (2018). Individuals requiring accommodations are asked to contact Kim Wojtanik in the Department of Education (607-274-5106 or kwojtanik@ithaca.edu). We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
