It is with a great deal of sorrow that I must bring to the campus community the news that our valued colleague and friend, associate director of public safety Norman Wall, has passed away following a courageous battle with cancer.

With his family by his side, Norm died on the evening of Tuesday, June 8, in Boston. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Cathy, children Andrew, Peter, and Patricia; and all their family and friends.

Norm began his nearly 30-year association with the College's Office of Public Safety as a watchman. Since then, through numerous promotions, he rose to the position of associate director of that department. During his lengthy service he was instrumental in developing a responsive and committed public safety staff, and he was honored with an Employee Recognition Award in 1996. In 2000 he became the first member of the public safety staff to attend the 200th session of the FBI National Academy, an 11-week course offering advanced investigative, management, and fitness training to selected officers from throughout the nation. In 2003 Norm was recognized for his commitment to the Ithaca College community with an IC Choice Award.

Norm's interest and involvement with young people extended well beyond the Ithaca College campus. In 2003 he was presented with the Douglas MacArthur Youth Service Award by the Newfield Masons for his exemplary contributions to youth programming in Newfield and Tompkins County. (See "Norman Wall Receives the Douglas MacArthur Award" for details about this award.)

I know I can speak for the entire campus community in saying that Norm will be deeply missed by all of us. Details on services to celebrate his life will be announced when those plans are finalized. Please keep Norm's family in your prayers through this difficult time.

EAP counselors will be available in the Office of Public Safety. Members of the campus community may also contact the Office of Human Resources at 274-3245 or EAP at 1-800-327-2255 for additional support.
