Representatives of the volunteer committee that organizes the annual community fireworks show in Ithaca report that some VIP packages are still available for this year's show on July 1.

Fran Benedict, chair of the committee, says anyone in the community is eligible to become a Very Important Patron of the fireworks.

The VIP area features a mini-concert by Sons of Pitches, the home-grown a cappella group that now tours the nation with major recording artists. This year's show honors the Discovery Trail and its eight member institutions, Benedict explained.

Festivities will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a baseball game on Freeman Field and, weather permitting, a tethered hot-air balloon thanks to RE/Max. Spectators in the VIP area atop the campus will get an "up-close and personal" view of the fireworks show, plus a barbecue buffet beginning at 7:00 p.m. The fireworks will begin about 9:45 p.m.

In addition to "Sons of Pitches," there will be clowns, magicians, face painting, and games for children throughout the evening. Singing Sal and his variety show and Bugs Bunny will also be in the VIP area.

The VIP package, which costs $135 for a family of five, also includes a special parking pass, an after-glow party, and a special exit route following the fireworks.

"Make the VIP area even more fun by getting a carload or two of your friends and family together and have a great time while you keep alive this Ithaca tradition," Benedict said. "You might even consider making this a company picnic for your employees and their family members."

Benedict said the VIP package is an exciting way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones, and groups of ten or more may reserve tables in the VIP area.

For information about VIP packages, contact Fran Benedict at Tompkins Trust Company, 607-273-3210.
