Transgender Day of Remembrance is an observance to honor and mourn transgender and gender non-conforming people whose lives have been lost to violence this past year in the US. The International Transgender Day of Remembrance began as a candlelight vigil in San Francisco in 1999, commemorating the life of Rita Hester, an African American trans woman who was murdered in nearby Allston.
