From shamans to sweat lodges to yoga, Americans have long been fascinated by the indigenous religious traditions of North America, Africa, and Asia.  But few Americans have more than superficial knowledge of these traditions.  The Philosophy & Religion Department is here to help you deepen your knowledge! Toward that end, we have created a new section of RLST 10500, Introduction to World Religions: Eastern and Indigenous in the MWF 1:00-1:50 time slot.  There are no prerequisites.

The course carries ICC Humanities Perspective credit in the Mind, Body, Spirit theme.

Further details:

  • INSTRUCTOR: Eric Steinschneider, Rothschild Place 139, Ext. 45802, esteinschneider@ithaca.edu
  • CRN: 42325
  • TIME: MWF 1:00-1:50
  • PREREQUISITES: None.
  • STUDENTS: All interested students are encouraged to apply. No prior knowledge of Eastern or Indigenous Religions is presumed.
  • COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the study of religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and various indigenous traditions in a way that questions what we mean when we talk about them as “religion”. Special attention is paid to the manner in which these traditions have adapted themselves to changing social, intellectual, and political conditions down to the present.

Another section of this same course is available in the MWF 9:00-9:50 time slot.

If you have any questions, please contact Prof. Steinschneider at the email address listed above.
