Press Release

Developing Student Work in the ‘2019 New Play Incubator’

Distinguished playwright Chiori Miyagawa will judge original work written and developed by students in annual playwriting competition.

ITHACA, NY (April 18, 2019) – NYC-based playwright and dramaturg Chiori Miyagawa will judge original work written and developed by students in the 2019 New Play Incubator on April 27 in the Clark Theatre. Miyagawa’s “Antigone Project”, a play created in conjunction with four other female award-winning playwrights (Tanya Barfield, Karen Hartman, Lynn Nottage, Caridad Svich) re-imagining the Sophocles tragedy, will be presented by Ithaca College Theatre in the 2019 – 2020 season.

New Play Incubator provides the opportunity for aspiring playwrights to workshop their work with other student directors and actors within a limited time frame, focusing on text and character development. Playwrights showcase their 10-minute play to an acclaimed guest judge with the hopes of winning the Golden Egg.

Saviana Stanescu, associate professor of Playwriting for the Department of Theatre Arts, conceived the idea last year when she invited Kenneth Lin, writer on “House of Cards”, to guest judge the 2018 New Play Incubator, awarding Lucas Dixon ’18 the Golden Egg.

“Writing and developing original work are crucial for students to understand the relationships between playwrights, actors, directors, dramaturgs, stage managers, producers, etc.” said Stanescu. “My main pedagogical goal has been to create an environment that mirrored the professional world of theatre and showcase original student work to the Ithaca College community and distinguished playwrights like Kenneth Lin and Chiori Miyagawa”.

Miyagawa’s work has been featured in The New York Times, American Theater Magazine, and Huffington Post as well as produced by regional and off-Broadway theaters. She is an alumna of New Dramatists and the current Playwright-in-Residence at Bard College, teaching undergraduate playwriting.

The two semifinalist judges were Aoise Stratford (Cornell University) and Anne Hamilton (Hamilton Dramaturgy) who each submitted their Top 10, based on which the 7 finalists were selected.

Finalists will present their 10-minute plays to Miyagawa and audiences for the New Play Incubator in the Clark Theatre in Dillingham Center on April 27 at 3:00 p.m., with a reception following afterward to celebrate the finalists. The event, including the post-show reception, is open for the general public to attend.
