The Athletic Training Education program in the Department of Exercise Science & Athletic Training (HSHP) was well represented again at the profession's oldest annual regional conference, the Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association, in Mashantucket, CT this past January.

Five faculty members from the ESAT Department and AT program attended the annual conference and clinical symposium along with 22 undergraduate students, and one graduate student. The conference represents Districts 1 and 2 of the EATA, or all of the New England states, along with NY, PA, DE and NJ.

The highlights of the event included 3 senior AT majors presenting peer reviewed free communication research projects to professionals and peers students, 2 in poster format and 1 in a rapid fire, oral presentation.

Senior Derek Hessing was the 2020 Undergraduate Oral Presentation Research winner, beating out almost 50 other undergraduate abstracts for the prize; permitting Derek to present his research on injuries in drum and bugle corp athletes to the conference in oral format. This award is representative of the most outstanding abstract submission in the undergraduate category, across all types of research conducted.

Senior Emily Sabo was the 2020 Undergraduate Poster Presentation Research winner, beating out the other 49 undergraduate abstract submissions for the prize with her complex case study project. Emily was one of 3 finalists for the awards, based on her abstract submission, and judged by a panel of 3 distinguished athletic training researchers.

Both Emily and Henry were recognized in front of the entire conference at the Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday night, receiving plaques and modest monetary awards.

Senior Emily Condello, also presented her research abstract in poster format at the conference, an experimental design focusing on ankle dorsiflexion motion and function, and she was our last minute, fill in program participant in the District 2 Quiz Bowl alongside 20 other accredited athletic training education programs. After a slow start, Emily did fantastic in the Jeopardy like format, making it into the Top 5 before the final Jeopardy question.

Emily Sabo turned out to be a double winner on the weekend, also receiving a professional scholarship from the New York State Athletic Trainers' Association on Saturday afternoon, during NYSATA's Annual Meeting.

Congrats to all of our emerging clinical scholars and award winners on the year, and thanks to ALL of our students who took time out of their winter vacation to attend and take part in the EATA Conference. Ithaca College continues to be one of the BES represented AT programs in the entire country at both regional and national symposia!

Thank you to all athletic training faculty and staff who supported our students' outstanding work this year, in the classroom, labs, office spaces and clinical settings, allowing our #sustainedexcellence to continue!
