Many people are purchasing iPads because of their ease of use. It is important to understand the options and know what you want to use an iPad for before purchasing one. Physical size, cellular connectivity and internal memory are important considerations. To determine which iPad best suits your needs consider two things: What will I use this device for and how do I plan to use it?  For example, if you plan to travel frequently and need to connect to the internet on the road when Wi-Fi is unavailable, you may want an iPad Mini that has cellular data connectivity. Perhaps you plan to edit video and photo content on your device and internet connectivity is not crucial. In this case, an iPad that is Wi-Fi only would be a good option. Finding the iPad that fits your needs requires thoughtful research. 

IT can provide valuable guidance through this decision-making and purchasing process.  The checklist below should help you start thinking about an iPad purchase.


  • What do you intend to use the iPad for?
  • Where do you intend to use it?
  • Will you require internet access when Wi-Fi is unavailable?
  • Do you plan to store large amounts of data on the device ( i.e. photos, video, documents, etc.)?
  • Who will purchase/own the equipment?
  • Who will purchase/own the applications?
  • Will you purchase AppleCare+?
  • Will the devices be managed or used as "personal" devices?

Warranty and AppleCare+

All iPads come with 90 days of complimentary phone support and one year of hardware repair coverage.  It is important to note that this limited warranty only covers defects in the iPad and does not cover any type of accidental damage. AppleCare+ extends the phone support and hardware repair coverage of an iPad's limited warranty to 2 years, and includes accidental damage coverage.

  • One-time purchase of $99 (per iPad)
  • Available at the time of your iPad purchase and can be purchased up to 30 days after your original purchase date
  • Covers two incidents of accidental damage ($49 service charge + tax)

Volume Purchase Program (VPP)

Apple gives you options when it comes to purchasing apps or books in volume.  Through Apple's VPP Education Store, the college can purchase apps and books in volume for distribution to students, faculty, staff, and administrators.  There are many workflows and options when purchasing in volume through VPP; ITS can help you determine the best approach for your needs. 

Inventory and Asset Tracking

If you've made your iPad purchase(s) through IT, we will inventory and enter your iPads into our asset tracking database.  Keep in mind that iPads are not part of our technology renewal program.

If you purchased your iPad(s) individually or through your department, IT can offer the same inventory and asset tracking services. Please contact the IT fixIT shop to coordinate these services.

Configuration and Management

iPads can be used right out of the box without any configuration necessary. However, if the iPads are intended to be used in a way that certain functions need to be managed or there is a need for a specific configuration, IT will provide advisory and configuration services. 


The IC network environment currently does not offer the ability to print from an iPad.
