Classical Audition
Two memorized songs chosen from solo voice literature. These selections must include one 20th-century British or American art song; and one additional song of your choice from traditional vocal literature (musical theater selections, jazz, or original compositions are not acceptable).

Jazz Audition
Perform a blues selection, jazz standard, and ballad.  Please choose selections from the provided list.  Possible examples of 12-bar blues that often work well for singers are Centerpiece (as performed by Lambert, Hendricks and Ross), Fine and Mellow (as performed by Billie Holiday), or Backwater Blues (as performed by Bessie Smith).  For the blues, perform the melody, improvise a solo of at least two choruses (using scat syllables), and return to the melody to end.  For the jazz standard, sing the melody, improvise once over the form (using scat syllables), and return to the melody.

Scales
Applicants must be prepared to sing major scales in any key, one octave, ascending and descending, and sung with letters, syllables, or on "la." Additionally, a one-octave chromatic scale, both ascending and descending, on "aah," "nah" or similar syllable. The purpose of this exercise is to evaluate pitch accuracy and intonation, not to demonstrate tessitura.

Note: If vocal jazz applicants would prefer to perform a song in a different key than indicated, they must bring three copies of the lead sheet in that key.

For auditions in Ithaca, applicants may provide their own accompanist or use an Ithaca College staff accompanist. The fee for this service is $25 for undergraduate applicants and $35 for graduate applicants. Checks should be made payable to "Ithaca College" and presented to the registration desk on the audition day. Music for the accompanist must be bound, clear, legible, and stay open and flat. Applicants must also provide original, published versions of their repertoire for the voice faculty at the audition.
