Jazz Horn Competition

Competition Divisions: Amateur and Professional

Repertoire requirements:
Blues. Any standard blues head. Be prepared to play multiple choruses of soloing.

  • One contrasting tune that falls into any one of these stylistic categories, including at least one chorus of soloing:

    • Medium swing

    • Up-tempo swing

    • Ballad

    • Latin

The competition will take place with a live rhythm section—piano, bass, drums. Please include the names of the tunes you are choosing to play on the registration form and be sure to include the concert pitch key you intend to play them in.

Winners from each division may be offered an opportunity to perform on a concert during the symposium, at the discretion of the judges.

  • Registration form opens February 12, 2016.

  • Registration form closes May 9, 2016

  • Competition date: June 13, 2016

Jazz Competition Rules and Regulations

  • All competitors must be registered for IHS IC 2016 by May 9, 2016.

  • All competitors are responsible for his/her own travel, room and board, IHS IC 2016 registration, etc.

  • The competition will be held on Monday, June 13, 2016.

  • The IHS IC 2016 Jazz Competition Committee has the right to cancel a winner at no cost to the IHS IC 2016 Symposium if the winner fails to abide by all Jazz Competition Rules and Regulations.

  • A ceremony (date TBD) will be held during IHS IC 2016 where all winners will be honored.

  • The term “professional” is defined here as anyone who is/was paid regularly to play their horn. Students still in school who are transitioning into the professional scene may apply to either area. Amateurs may choose to compete in the professional division; however, professionals may not compete in the amateurl division.

  • Each competitor will receive written adjudicators' comments on their performance.
