Renowned photography foundation Aperture hailed Ithaca College’s Image Text Ithaca Press for leading the way in experimental and hybrid photobooks. ITI Press is a project of the college’s Image Text MFA program.

In a feature in The Photobook Review that also appeared on Aperture.org, ITI Press is praised as “a publisher with a unique vision that brings together, in an innovative and experimental form, writing and photography.” The piece explores how co-directors Nicholas Muellner and Catherine Taylor, both associate professors at IC, combine their individual expertise in photography and writing to publish works of image and text by national and international writers and artists. They are commended for their mutual respect for each other’s knowledge and ability to work together to create new ways to integrate words and photos.

“Aperture’s thoughtful recognition for the Image Text program and press is especially gratifying,” Muellner said. “Aperture’s international prominence in the fields of contemporary photography and photographic publishing, and the broad reach and appeal of their publications, lend great weight to the innovative, world-class work our artists, faculty and students have been producing with Ithaca College.”

Photobooks published by ITI Press have been lauded by critics and have found success in competitions. Three of their books — two in 2018 and one in 2017 — have been shortlisted for the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards, and two books were featured in Time Magazine’s list of the 25 best photobooks last year.
