Linda Heyne can speak with authority on strategies for including adults and children with developmental and other disabilities into recreation programs in schools and community settings.
In addition to having served as an inclusion coordinator, she has conducted studies and written books and journal articles on inclusive recreation, home school/community collaborations, cultivating friendship for people with developmental disabilities, and therapeutic recreation programs in schools.
Instead of focusing on people’s deficits and impairments, Heyne stresses strengths-based approaches that will take people farther along the continuum of well being. By developing interventions based on people’s strengths, talents, aspirations, and goals, therapeutic recreation specialists can support people’s involvement in meaningful leisure and a high quality of life.
