Call for Applications: Expense-Paid Fellowships to the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival for Doctoral Students of Color

ITHACA, NY — Students of color currently pursuing a doctorate in any area of study in the United States are invited to apply for a four-day, funded fellowship program that will feature participation in the screenings, lectures, workshops, master classes and concerts offered by Ithaca College’s Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival 2012 (FLEFF). This year’s weeklong festival will begin at Ithaca College on March 25. The fellowships will run from March 29 to April 1 and cover approved travel costs, room, board and festival passes.

“We are very proud of the FLEFF Fellows program because it adds a range of diverse voices to discussions about sustainability,” said Warren Schlesinger, program coordinator and associate professor and chair of accounting. “In addition, the FLEFF Fellows program is a unique opportunity for graduate students of color from around the country to meet and share a common interest in sustainability.”

The theme of this year’s festival, “Microtopias,” will explore how small, cooperative systems of harmony such as the Oneida Colony and the Chautauqua movement have inspired ways to improve their surrounding environments. Interested applicants are asked to write a 500-word essay about why attending FLEFF 2012 will connect “Microtopias” to their research and teaching interests. The essay, along with a current CV, should be sent to by Feb. 20. There is no application fee.

“The Fellows program contributes to the college’s strategic diversity goals, models interdisciplinary engagement and dialogue on the themes presented during the festival and promotes the name of Ithaca College beyond the region,” said Tanya Saunders, assistant provost of international studies and special projects. “The FLEFF Fellows also interact with our undergraduate students, especially our FLEFF interns, who are interested in graduate study.”
